cool, thanks digiot.

Why do I see so little posts here about KDE, even when it has the most votes. It's customizable, pretty (hey, isn't eye candy cool?), and is the most consistent DE that I've ever seen (http://linux.sys-con.com/read/32640.htm).

KDE is slow and bloated

I prefer wmii as my window manager. It's simple, lightweight, and dynamic window management is like, so nice. Wmii isn't for everyone, and it's not as lightweight as dwm, but it sure is efficient (at least for me).

I currently use larswm, and it's fine, but I'm not completeley sure if that's what I'm looking for. I also tried KDE, twm and fvwm2. Happy with everything if I can do my stuff :) |
I like XFCE,because it's fast and handsome.

voted KDE (for control freak in me :)), but used (& loved) 'em all

While I tried out both KDE and Gnome, I didn't try the latest version of the two side by side, I couldn't tell right now which one is more bloated. Last time I tried KDE, it wasn't bad because I was running Gentoo and it took 15 seconds of the whole 45 seconds it took to load the system. My current system (Ubuntu 6.06) loads in 40 seconds, Gnome loads in about 5~10 seconds. Windows XP takes 30 seconds to load, but does nothing I want to do except play my only windows game.
All timings were taken on the same computer, kernel 2.6 in both cases. This bloat story, hey, we can drop it. OK? Since Vista came out, bloat has a new definition. Unless it starts to hurt because no one can contribute anymore since the code is unreadable, or release cycles get too long because developpers have 5 Xinerama-ed monitors plugged in one computer trying to slay one bug, all is well. When you think KDE includes a powerful file manager, browser, a bunch of Edutainment, the flexibility... and think of simply this... The developers put their life and time into a project they believe. They like to hear people tell them that they are doing good to the community. "This is bloatware" is not exactly the kind of "thank you" comment they are expecting. So please. Your bloat comments are not necessary. You are a developer? Improve it. You are a user? Motivate them by positive comments. You can voice your want for improvements politely in a non-bashing manner. |
vista is not bloat at all ... or whoever say vista is bloat is lying ... ^_^

screenshot I believe I experimented briefly with larswm but I've never gotten along too well with tiling WMs (ratpoison is probably my favorite of those). Many people absolutely love them, though. twm is surprisingly cool but I just can't do without multiple desktops. That's the ancestor of the vtwm/ctwm/fvwm/enlightenment/etc branch which all add the multiple desktops and are all pretty cool. And if I was going to use a DE, KDE would be it, but I'm glad I have more than DEs to choose from. blackbox, fluxbox, icewm, and pekwm are some others I've used quite a bit. pekwm's very underrated or underpopular or something. |

Hey,
KDE, Gnome etc are not window managers, they are desktop environments. Sawfish, metacity, blackbox etc are window mangers. |
