Email Notification - System

I use webmail, accessed with a browser (typically Firefox). I have an email notification add-on in Firefox but obviously it only works if Firefox is running.

I need a system notification that will alert me to arrival of emails independently of the browser.

Recommendations?

Possible. What is your webmail though? That will tell you what kind of request/url/api you will have to craft to get an alert. For example, I use this one for gmail alerts in conky:

From there, it should be trivial to set up a crontab entry and a gui alert when new mail is found.

I'm considering dumping the webmail provided by my useless ISP and moving to Fastmail so I have a trial account @fastmail.fm

Hmm. IMO - From what I am reading about their API, you should pick someone else.

They don't maintain their SOAP interface from 2002, not likely you'll be able to interface with it to get unread email counts or alerts without considerable programming.

OK thanks. It looks like, if I decide to move to Fastmail, I will have to be content with notifications via the browswer (when its running). Thanks for the responses.

Actually, not that big a deal because the notifications are pushed to my Blackberry whether or not my laptop browser is running and the BB has both sound and LED alerts.
