Question Eclipse won't let me select a Windows share as Workspace

Environment: Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit), Eclipse Helios 3.6 (64-bit), Android 2.3 SDK + ADT.

All works great, but I can only select a workspace that's on the local system. Eclipse won't let me select shared folder on a Samba server.

Ubuntu's URI for this share is of the form:

Code:
smb://userid@192.168.0.2/sandbox/workspace
Even when I type this manually into the edit box, Eclipse won't accept it.

I don't have this problem with the same Eclipse 3.6 on Windows.

Is there a workaround to solve this, without installing the smbfs package and without permanently mounting the share?

Instead of using a Windows share, how about setting up a cvs repository on that machine? Eclipse can work with those very easily and OS issues don't come into the picture.

This a nice workaround, especially when I already have a CVS repository on that machine.

I would like, however, to see if this solvable at all the way I outlined. That is, having Eclipse use the Windows shares provided by the GNOME desktop (which are accessible to other applications on my Ubuntu, e.g. gedit).

I've been doing some googling, and to be honest, I'm not seeing a solution on Linux that meets your requirements. People seem to mostly mount their shares via Samba or NFS. The only thing that comes close is to check if Remote System Explorer plugins are installed on the Linux Eclipse. I wonder if behind the scene, the Windows version of Eclipse isn't actually mounting the Samba share and thus making it a "local" drive. That sort of behavior would be completely impossible under Linux unless Eclipse were being run as root (a really bad idea).

Thumbs up

Thanks again Hangdog42. Of course I could use like others the smbfs/CIFS solution, but I am trying to see whether the redundancy of having two Samba clients running on the same system can be avoided.

It's really sad that a powerful platform like Eclipse can't "talk" to a beautifully crafted system like Ubuntu 10.04.

It is also sad that I think faster than I type and I missed "is" twice in the previous post.
