dual screen problems with certain monitors, works for others
Hey all,
I have a radeon card which has a single connector in the back, and then i plug in this little splitter looking thing which breaks the output down in to 2 connectors, either 2 DVI's or 2 VGAs. I have two monitors which are DVI's and I have two monitors which are VGA. So I found the following config, and using it I can get dual screens with my two DVI capable monitors: http://mg.pov.lt/xorg.conf (found it on the wiki) However if I connect the two VGA monitors I get a bunch of errors when trying to start X and i end up with duplication across the two screens. Here is the xorg log, i'd greatly appreciate any help! Code:
(II) Setting vga for screen 0. |
Have you gotten this issue fixed yet?
You are only running rwo acreens at any one time, correct? Those two VGA monitors, are they the exact same identical types? And, are you actually using the xorg.conf file at the wiki link?? Like, that actual file? I gotta say, that is absolutely the most confusing and bizarre xorg file I have yet seen. :) However, assuming that you are using something based on it, there are no Horiz and V sync rates specified for the monitors somewhere in there, and the error resulting in the log file above indicates that the X server is unable to find a suitable resolution/sync-rate combination which it can use with the VGA monitors. Before I get too far, or too confused :) Please advise whether you are actually still working on this problem, or if you have it fixed or have moved on. I know the post is a couple weeks old now. Thanks :) |
heh, first thoughts are would a splitter cable actually give you the capability of the video card running two screens. Most dual head video cards have two ports. A splitter cable is just used to allow output to more than one monitor, not separate output.
Now, what you could do assuming that the card is not dual head is define a screen size that encompasses the size of two monitors. Here xinerama is your friend. |
I have not gotten this issue fixed yet. Only two screens at a time, yes.
The two VGA monitors are identical. Yes, I am actually using that xorg.conf :) It is confusing, but it allows you to specify which layout you want with a param. True, no sync rates are specified, could give that a shot. A splitter does give me dual capability, it gives me the capability with the DVI splitter, but not the VGA splitter. Any more ideas? |
OK, If you will post some info for me, I'm willing to try wading thru this crazy file and see if I can come up with anything..
1... Give examples of the 'param' you would give to select a server layout. 2... The native resolution s of the 2 pairs of monitors 3... The horiz and vert sync and refresh rates for the 2 pairs of monitors. 4... The BusID of your card is 1:0:0 right? and it's AGP, yes? It is the ONLY device in use, or is there also an onboard device being used? 5... Make & model of the 2 pairs of monitors. (I can get some of this stuff from the log file, but it would be easier to deal with if you could post it.) :) |
