Dual monitors, VGA and DVI 2nd monitor turns off

Hello,

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 with a NVIDIA NV41 GEForce 6800 pci card.

When I boot, both terminals display the initial mint logo display.

After that, the 2nd monitor connected to the VGA port goes on standby and goes dark. When I go into system settings/display, it shows both monitors. What needs to be fixed, loaded, updated? Thanks in advance.

Here is my system info:

Have you tried assigning the monitor to display anything, since it is seen by the oS and desktop? What does nvidia-settings show you?

2nd monitor is still on power savings setting. When I try to modify the settings in Display to the desired xrandr settings 1280 by 1024, Mint Display sends me a message. Failed to apply configuration

GDBus.Error:org.gtkGDBus.Unmapped GError. Quark_gnome_2drr_2derror_2dquarkCode 3:
required virtural size does not fit available size: requested + (5163,2560), minimum+(320,200), max =(4096,4096).

I also noticed that when I first open Display, the 2nd monitor does not show the resolution settings. I have to switch on Primary settings to get the resolution settings to display. I then try to apply the settings and I get the above notice.

what i see in your xrandr output:
  • VGA-1 is ready to be used, but not actually used (no *)
  • DVI-I-1 is in use and primary, no problems there
  • TV-1 is connected and in use, but what is it? you haven't mentioned that at all yet. a TV as third monitor???

After rummaging around in XRANDR, I found the the solution.

Use xrandr to activate the dormant monitor.

xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --mode 1280x1024 --rate 60.02
xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --primary --rotate normal --output VGA-1 --auto --right-of DVI-I-1 --output TV-1 --off
