Drag and drop is terrible

Hey,

I am trying to switch over to linux, but I am still having issues.

1. Drag and Drop is not nearly advanced as windows (try dragging and dropping from a zip archive to the Gnome Desktop).
2. File associations seem to be laking. Often I will have to manually open the software and go find the document.

I currently use Gnome 2.8.3.

Any recommendations on how to fix these two things?

Thanks,

David

personally i dont bother on the drag n drop stuff i learned to live in the console most of my time anyway cuz of slackware.

but i think ubuntu is the most advanced and close-to-windows linuxversion so you should try that and search their forum. maybe you should try to use kde too i believe kde has more neat windows like functions. gnome is more stable imo though

Personnaly I use the console a lot, but I still need a powerful interface. I posted this message 5 minutes after the president of my company sat behind a kubuntu machine (ubuntu with kde) and he had the drag and drop problem.

Dragging and dropping from ARK is for small archives. If you have a large archive, use the extract button. You can drag and drop from large archives but it's tricky... You have to hold the mouse button down until it finishes extracting, which could take several minutes. Someday, as archives get larger and larger, somebody will get tired of this behavior and fix it, but there is little motivation when it's so easy to hit the extract button, or drop to a terminal and execute tar zxvf.

try kde thats what i use drag and drop works just like windows so is the whole interface, its great. Haven't used gnome though so i cant contribute on that

I agree with Samnjugu - KDE drag and drop is excellent. Also tried Gnome - works but it didn't feel as sharp - might just be me tho. The size of the archive didn't seem to matter much either but I run Dual core so that may be why.

I have to use both XP and Linux and I get caught with XP because you have to click twice. I sit there waiting...and waiting looking like an idiot when I realize why.

Looks like the new ark is working alot better. I'd suggest doing an update. I'll know more when I extract more archives!

The problem here is that you are using GNOME. The file extension issues as well as drag and drop are non issues in KDE.

Alright. So what I got from the above posts is update to the newest software and use KDE.

I am installing a fresh Gentoo installation on my brand new second hand refurbished laptop. I will use KDE and add to cron emerge --sync.

If this resolves my issue, I will post my results.

Thanks for the help,

David
