there is a bug with ubuntu 7 in that the screen resolution sometimes is limited to 800x600. that's because xresprobe isn't doing its job.
you can fix the problem by modifying the xorg.conf and putting in the right vsync/hsync values.
that involves going online and looking up the specs for your monitor.
