Display server broken
 

Hi all,

Hope you are all fine.

I was on the computer (HP Pavillion dv2000 with Ubuntu 9.10) and suddenly the screen became black. I moved the mouse and came back to normal. An icon appeared on the panel and when placing the pointer on top a message displayed: “Session active, not inhibited, screen idle. If you can see this text, your display server is broken and you should notify your distributor. http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2009/...al-of-bodges/”. Then the icon desappeared.

I went to the website and read that the problem as to do with the IDLECOUNTER of gnome-power-manager. It suggests how to solve the problem with some patches.

1.I would like to report the problem but I do not know how
2.I would like to solve the problem but it gives two patches (which one to chose?) and I do not know how to use it.

I don't think your having a problem. The screen went black maybe due to inactivity and when you brought it right back by creating a wake event ( moving the mouse ) it just took a bit to remove the idle icon. They probably put it there for broken acpi or bad display drivers I am not 100% sure since this is gnome. If you were actively using the computer and it did this then I would say there is something wrong with the display and power management stuff. The patches they offer will probably require you to apply them to the source and recompile whatever module they are for if even for a module and not something ancient like for the old combined x server stuff.

I think I will just not touch anything now and wait intil I get know more about Linux. I just installed Ubuntu 1 month ago.

Just keep an eye on it and if you see any other problems with it then I would worry enough to see if there was something you could do to fix it.
