Are there any tools or tricks for manipulating desktop workspaces on a laptop/tower with multiple monitors?
For example, as I write this, I have LQ open in a browser on my laptop. At the same time, I have Thunderbird and two x-terms open on a 26-inch external monitor.
The corresponding "workspace" shows all of the open "windows" and highlights the browser where I'm writing this posting. However, I have no indication that any of these thumbnails are on an external monitor.
Can anyone tell about some way to get better information? For example, is there a workspace icon for the system tray that is multiple monitor aware?
For example, it might use color/grey to draw attention to thumbnails based on whether they are on the primary display or an alternate display. It might draw attention based on whether the display has current focus or some other display has focus. You get the idea...

I think I understand the question completely and, sadly, think that it is not possible. As I see it the goal is to have each monitor display a different workspace which I have never seen a solution for.
Personally, when using my desktop with an NVIDIA card, I did something called "seperate X sessions" but now I no longer know the name nor whether it is supported (though I still do it) where I have separate XFCE desktops on each screen and am not able to move windows between them. This is something I acheived using the NVIDIA configuration utility and I do it because it means full-screen applications behave very well compared with the other options.
I deally I would either have what is being asked for (each monitor showing a different workspace) or to go further to have each monitor show a different vtt (so change between them using ctrl+alt+F* combinations) bu I don't tink either is possible.
I'm repling now because I was watching this thread and leving it as zero reply but since there's a reply now I do no harm in answering even though I have no help to give, for which I apologise.
Hi,
I don't really understand your question, would be nice to see a screenshot.
Manipulating with workspaces depends on your DE actually, which one do you use?
For playing with multiple monitor setup, you may want to use xrandr.
I use Linux Mint 17.3 with Cinnamon desktop.
I'm not asking to MANIPULATE the workspaces beyond what the workspace selector tray widget provides.
I simply want more information about things that are open on which monitor.
The workspace widget displays a thumbnail for every "window" open on each workspace. These thumbnails
do not have any indication of which monitor is in use. The only indicator is which "window" on the active workspace has focus.
