Desktop record as v4l device

I want to be able to create a new v4l (2, if needed) device where I could put (stream/tunnel/...) the video recorded from my X/KDE desktop. I don't know where to begin from (xserver-xorg-video-v4l ??), neither if it's possible do it right now.

Once it's done, I'll be able to use that device as any other v4l device: stream it with any video software (vlc, camstream, ffmpeg) or use it with videochat software as a webcam source (empathy, ekiga, kopete, skype, etc.).

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance!!

See you,

I used the ffmpeg solution (#2). I'd also like it to capture audio with proper syncing, but I haven't gotten around to figuring that out.

Hi tuxdev!!
Thanks a lot by your help!! That's just what I was looking for!! And yes, the second option (ffmpeg's one) is the better!!

Issues: debian does not have vloopback neither mjpegtools_yuv_to_v4l. I had to download them in tgz, unpack, correct a little fprintf format warning on mjpeg, compile and install. Everything is fine, now!!

Next step: try to control ffmpeg's grabbing options without reinitializing it...

See you!
