Desktop icons vanished

Mint 13, 64 bit.
Several days ago all icons on my desktop vanished. I hit Alt + Ctrl + d and they came back for a day. That does not work anymore.
I can see everthing that is supposed to show up on my desktop using Caja. All the folders and files are fine, they just don't show up where I expect them to.
My toolbar is working just fine.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Icons are back

I went down to the corner and cracked open "Menu".
In "Places", I hit "Desktop".
They are all back and I am happy again.
Some days ....
