desktop extends into overscan area on TV

Good afternoon!

I have recently upgraded the graphics on my downstairs computer, intending to make it an HTPC come file server. The graphics card produces a clear picture at a decent resolution, but the picture seems to extend somewhat outside of the visible area on the screen. It is not practical to adjust the monitor itself, since the adjustments are just right for the DVD player and tivo which we frequently use too.

Is there perhaps a way of putting something in xorg.conf that puts margins along the edges of the screen, where nothing can ever be placed?

It *might* depend on the video card, ie nvidia or AMD. Here is a possible solution:

(Second entry, "overscan xorg.conf" in Google. Some of the other entries had [Solved] as well, hope that help.)

Open up your graphics setting control panel either amd/nvidia and look for an option called scaling.
