Desktop effects could not be enabled - Nvidia - Compiz
Hello all.
I have yet another problem. I am running Ubuntu Gusty with a GeForce 7200 GS PCI express card. Until recently I have been able to run the "normal" desktop effects nicely and "extra" ran kinda choppy. What i wanted was the complete 3D desktop experience (the multi-desktop cube thing). So I installed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run hopeing for smoother video and the 3d cube option (which I have been unable to locate as of yet). Unfortunately I now cannot even enable "normal" desktop effects. I get the "Desktop effects could not be enabled" message. I'm worse off then when I started. Can anyone tell me how to clean up my mess and how to enable full 3D effects. can my card even handle effects like that? please let me know. I'm still a bit of a newbie so if you need any output for xorg.conf or the like please let me know how to do so and it will be posted asap.

Thanks for your reply but frankly that link is of little use. It says that if I get the "Desktop effects could not be enabled" message than my card dose not support 3d effects. This is not the case here. I was running some effects and wanted more effects but I messed up and now I can't get anything. I've not changed the card, just the driver. I've tried the drivers I was using before with no luck. I still can't enable desktop effects. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You are using vesa mode, that's why you can't get your desktop effects or compizfusion to work. You need to do as the above says and generate a new xorg.conf file. I'm not sure how you go about selecting your graphics card in order to generate a new xorg.conf. By all means try and figure it out yourself, I've no doubt one of the ubuntu savvy users will be able to better direct you.

I am now runing the Nvidia driver (not vesa). but NVIDIA X Settings says "fail to query the GLX server vendor". when I install Xserver-xgl then x server will not start at all and I need to remove Xserver-xgl at the command line. I ran the "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" but all that did was give me options to set screen resolution (which is fine by the way). Right now I can use the system fine and even watch movies but my openGL screensavers do not work and I cannot enable "normal" desktop effects let alone advanced desktop effects (the desktop cube) which is my ultimate goal here.
Any more help would be appreciated. Thank you Linux community
Ok... First, thank you Nexus for all your help. But I had messed up my system royally. So, desperate for the compizfusion cube and other effects, I backed up my Home directory and reinstalled Ubuntu. This time through it worked great. I am now running compiz fusion. I hate to shoot a fly with a bazooka but sometimes, even in Linux, a fresh install is the best option.

You did indeed shoot a fly with a bazooka. What your problem was would have been found in the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and almost certainly the problem could have been fixed swiftly.
What you did worked, but as your system grows and you install packages, you will find that reloading the OS to solve a minor problem is not practical.
In Windows, you do this because Microsoft makes a deliberate effort to make the workings of the system obscure and hard to follow - and it is indeed deliberate. Hence reloading the OS is often the most practical route because otherwise you just can't figure the problem out in a reasonable period of time.
Linux, however, logs everything and tries to give you all the information you need. Linux is therefore a breeze to troubleshoot, relative to Windows.
Reloading for every little thing is the Windows way. In linux or any other *nix, you can fix it.
I have been running my current Linux system since 2001. In that time, the system has been upgraded from Mandrake 7.2 all the way to Mandriva 2008 without a reload. It has just recently moved onto its fourth hard drive in that time. It has been through 3 motherboards, 4 processors, 2 HD controllers, and many other config changes along the way.
In that time and through those moves, I have never reloaded. I have restored from backup a few times; once when the SCSI HD controller failed and corrupted the hell out of the HD, and a couple times when I managed to hose things up thoroughly while hacking around. But I have never reloaded. Never needed to; could always fix it.
That's a big part of the point. With Linux, you can fix it.

I have the same problem. Nvidia GeForce FX-5500, Ubuntu 9.04, HP Pavilion a305. All I'm looking to achieve is Normal Desktop effects and I can't even get to that point. It appears I have all the Compiz components installed and running including CompizConfig Settings Manager. Just can't seem to get there from here.
Here is my Xorg.0.log output file. I have no idea what to look for in here. Any help greatly appreciated.
