Previous versions of Red Hat allowed each user to select their default desktop. This info was stored in a .desktop (or some other dot file) and had an entry something like desktop=kde or desktop=gnome.

Is there something similar in fedora? If so what's the syntax and dot file?

look in .xinitrc I believe. that should give the Window mangaer for that user.
