Dell Inspiron 537s and Linux (Fedora 11)

Hi,

I have finally decided to have a dedicated linux server at home. This machine will mainly be used as a File Server (iTunes, SAMBA, etc.). Nothing hard core, SSH, etc etc.

I have built machines before, but am just not up to it this time around. Does anyone know if the Dell Inspiron 537s would be good for a linux (Fedora 11) server? They are so cheap, $269, it is hard not to jump at it...

Thanks

Yes, think before you flame

Yes, it is 2009, I googled for quite some time prior to posting this question. And no, the Dell Inspiron 537s is not a Laptop, it is a desktop. Which of course you would have noticed had you actually read what you googled before flaming.

Thanks for the help

It would be fine for a samba server except for only having room for two hard drives. So you could use RAID-1 but not RAID-5.

Here is the CNET lowdown:

The Bottom Line: You might find a better deal from Dell if you configure an Inspiron 537s online, but this retail only model has little to recommend it. From slow performance to a weak feature-set, this budget slimtower is outclassed by too many other retail desktops.
The specs are better than what many people use, and certainly better then commercial home NAS products.
Taking off Vista, and installing only what you need for the services you offer should offset what led to the poor CNET review.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, my thoughts exactly. I had seen that review earlier, but since the machine was bogged down with Windows for the test I wasn't sure how much of a difference that would make in the result.

Regarding Raid, Raid 1 would be fine for what I am doing. I basically need a place to serve my development projects (SVN), File Sharing basically for iTunes (SAMBA), and probably an SVN View like Trac (Apache). Its really just a way for me to become better organized, as it would just be me (and maybe my wife for the music) using the server.

So, $269 is a pretty good deal, no?

That price sounds great. You might want to look into low power (fanless) boxes that come with Linux or no OS if power consumption or noise is a consideration.
