Dark themes not working in Gnome-2.20

Hi,
I compiled Gnome-2.20 frm source, and it's chugging on pretty fine. But the problem I'm facing is that dark themes somehow are not working. I got the Mire V2 and Aura GTK+ themes from http://www.gnome-look.org, but they are not getting applied. I think the problem is that I may be missing the GTK pixmap engine, which the aforementioned themes use. But I have installed the gtk-engines pack on the system, and I don't see the pixmap engine in it. I had heard it was deprecated in an earlier release. So I installed an earlier version of gtk-engines which had the pixmap engine, but on restarting the env. I got conflicts and GNOME refused to start. I'm running Slack 12. Please advise.

P.S. I tried Dropline, but the problem persisted.
