Custom modifier keys in X

I want to use the key below ESC, which is "§" on my swedish keyboard as a modifier key. And I made it work by running:
Code:
xmodmap -e "add mod3 = section"
However "§" is still inserted, for example in the terminal, when I use it.

That is: if I bind mod3 + 1 to some command, that command is run when I press that combo, but if I'm in a terminal when I press the combo "§" will get inserted first.

So basically I want to remove a key, and only use it as modifier.

This worked:

Code:
xmodmap -e "remove mod4 = Hyper_L"
xmodmap -e "keycode 49 = Hyper_L"
xmodmap -e "add mod3 = Hyper_L"
