Computer suddenly switched off, then KDE malfuntions?

The box suddenly, spontaneously, switched of: lights go out. Switched it on again by pressing the power button and it works alright except KDE has a black background and the menu does not pop up as usual when the pointer is moved to the base of the screen. No icons only blackness. But the applications work perfectly well, except they have to be started from a terminal - because no icons, menu, etc..

Tried to apt-get install --reinstall KDE but it said kde-base was not going to be installed or something like that (its Debian Lenny Backport, so not strictly stable, if that matters). So am a bit stuck. Any thoughts at all?

Try deleting your /home/<username>/.kde directory by running:

$ mv ~/.kde ~/.kde.old

It doesn't actually remove .kde, just renames it .kde.old. Then reboot. A new .kde directory will be automatically constructed using kde defaults. You should then be able to reconfigure kde to your liking. In all probability your .kde directory which holds all the kde configuration files was corrupted by the hard shut down. Doing the above will reconstruct .kde to a workable configuration.

Thanks. I'll try it and post if it works.

Incidentally your username writes the word of God in porn magazines while mine discovered an earth-like planet. Weird congruence.

It did work. Did: mv .kde .kde.afterhardshutdown in home directory and then re-booted. Strangely, perhaps, my origional KDE configuration was intact: icons, degree of transparency of terminal, desktop background slideshow.
