Complete System Freeze

If I use alt+ctrl+F1 my system will freeze up completely. alt+ctrl+backspace and alt+SysRq+[r,s,e,i,u,b] both fails to work. I have to do a hard reboot. My system also freezes when I try returning from a locked screen. It will let me enter in my password then act as if it is going to go back to my desktop but it doesn't.
I'm running Ubuntu 8.10

lspci:
Code:

kills your tty so in Ubuntu which is debian has gui running at telinit 3 for login but since you crashed your tty you have left your xserver dead and are unable to get to a terminal to type in the killall gdm so you can restart the display manager. if I was you I would not push those keys. and if you push ctl-alt-delete it will reboot but it will do it with that same blank screen till it restarts. good luck.

Thanks for the response. The problem is I cannot reboot with anything but a hard restart. If it is just the xserver i should be able to reboot with alt+sysRq+[r,s,e,i,u,b], but can't. I don't have this problem on my laptop, so ideally i shouldn't have it on my desktop.

Eredeath, if your X is working fine, why don't you use xterm or other terminal emulation program?
I really don't know what may be your problem, on my debian I have no crashes when trying to switch ttys. You should check your X server, it could be that it's its fault
