Im sick of looking online for posts relating to my issue... Please don't flame me for this.
I just want Compiz to work... But everytime I click enable desktop effects in the desktop effects, and it simply says "Desktop effects could not be enabled"
I am not sure about the kernel version, I am at school right now... Should be the latest stable one, though.
Im using Fedroa Core 8, I just got the live CD and installed on my hard drive. Compiz, I'm not sure about either...
I have a video card, but idk what kind =( I don't know how to find out, but I know it's not nVidia.
My com is an HP Pavillion Desktop... See I really don't know much about this computer, as I'm only going to be using it for a short time
I am so sorry =( I don't know very much about the computer...
I am pretty sure I can't get Compiz to work because I have the wrong vido/graphic card drivers...
I am also having this issue with Fedora 8 right now, so I am interested to see the answer here. I installed yesterday intending to try it out as a desktop environment. I have an Nvidia 8800 GTX graphics card, and desktop effects won't work for me either. It's doubtlessly a driver problem here.
When I try to install my card's latest Linux drivers, a message tells me that the X Server must be stopped before I can. How do I stop it?
Also, does this version of Fedora come with Compiz, or do I need to install it sepparately?

I think HP pavillion doesnot ship with a separate video card. Unless you have a good 3D video card you cannot enjoy the compiz effects.

You need third party repos to install the correct drivers and compiz.
2) Install nvidia driver
$ sudo yum install kmod-nvidia
Note: May require a system restart.
3) Even though FC8 comes with compiz more additional softwares are required to use it better so install the below softwares.
$ sudo yum install compiz-fusion compiz-fusion-gnome compiz-fusion-extras compiz-fusion-extras-gnome compiz-manager gnome-compiz-manager
