Compiz debian failed
I've installed compiz and amended my xorg.conf file using this guide:

But when I 'compiz --replace' it does not work.

compiz --replace
compiz (core) - Warn: SmcOpenConnection failed: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported
Backend    : ini
Integration : true
Profile    : default
Adding plugins
Initializing core options...done
Initializing move options...done
Initializing resize options...done
Initializing place options...done
Initializing decoration options...done

(compiz-decorator:3042): GConf-CRITICAL **: gconf_client_set_string: assertion `val != NULL' failed

And then it does not exit. It sits in the terminal until I click the X, at which time my windows stop working properly until I log out and back in again.

What's up with it?

What version of Debian are you attempting to do this in?

Oops sorry for not posting that.

Debian 6.06

I see you are using Ubuntu. Ubuntu uses Unity by default which uses compiz for it's window manager, is compiz working right in Ubuntu?
Are you running Gnome in Debian or a different desktop environment?
Have you installed all the right drivers ect?
How old is this computer?

Also, did you use

apt-get install compiz
in which case it should not be necessary to manually edit configuration files, or did you install it from an outside source?
Configuration can be done with CompizConfig Settings Manager (including Gnome compatibility).
