cli instant message notification for tiling window manager

Hi,

I'm configuring one tiling window manager, herbstluftwm, and want to add some kind of notification of a cli instant message program to the panel, so that I can know when I receive a message.
The notification can be some kind of bash piping.

What cli program should I use?
Currently, I use bitlbee via irssi, and know of mcabber and finch (don't like very much this one).
