Changing the login screen setup [Linux Mint/Ubuntu]

Hello LQ,

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about changing the setup of the Gnome login screen? Right now I'm using the default where it is set up like this:

I know it's possible because Mac OSX has it (and Mac OSX is pretty much modified Linux though it's probably not using Gnome.) so does anyone know how this would be done?
