Changing /home/$USER Directory From an SSD to an HDD

{I had a stroke in 2011, and am brain-damaged with short term memory loss}

I use Debian Testing.

My computer died last October, and I bought myself a new computer with an SSD. I also have 3 3TB HDDs, and 1 8TB HDD {for backups}

My computer defaults to the SSD, and my SSD is my default /home/$USER, but I have my REAL $USER is /home/PUBLIC/$USER on an HDD, and I have a crontab set up to run every 15 minutes to copy /home/$USER to /home/PUBLIC/$USER/XXX.

{{yeah... the XXX directory is a temporary measure}}

QUESTION: is it possible to kill /home/$USER and use /home/PUBLIC/$USER instead, or will my computer be a {bad-word} and screw things up for me?

In other words, can anyone tell me how to do this for myself?

*: If it isn't doable, it's not a big problem, just wondering what happens if /home/$USER vanishes.

And I DO NOT WANT TO DO A REINSTALL!!!!!

Thank you for reading this posting, and have yourself a great day!

Use usermod to change the location of a user’s $HOME.
Maybe
Code:
usermod -d /home/PUBLIC/$USER
See man usermod.
Backup /etc/passwd first…

Thank you, I will give it a try and see what happens.

{{PS: I would have read this earlier, but today is Costco Day {it's actually the first of every month but I NEVER go to Costco on a Saturday or a Sunday}}}

Have a great day, and thank you for your response!

In ancient Rome they used vipw and vigr commands to edit user accounts.
