Changing desktop background to command prompt

I was wondering what approach one might take to change the Desktop so that it doesn't display a picture but possibly the output from a command (netstat, tcpdump, etc).
I tried tinkering with Devilspie with no success.
Suggestions?

You can use root-tail to display the contents of logs or text files of whatever nature.

You could as well use a transparent terminal and launch a command inside of it. Then just configure the window to be borderless and stay in the background.
