change Kate from default 'file' opener

This is hopefully an easy problem but one which I have spent hours on, spinning my wheels.
Sometime ago I reprogrammed my laptop to use Kate to open all files instead of Konqueror. I cannot undo this now and would like to reverse it. I vaguely remember doing this on the command line.
Any suggestions of where to look for the necessary config file or ? file to change will be much appreciated.

Konqueror does not normally "open" all files. How are you "opening" them with Kate? You can set file associations with Konqueror itself - open Konqueror > Menu: Settings > Configure Konqueror > File Associations. Setting one should enable you to determine which file changes but AFAIK there is no global setting. There is a setting per group and a setting per document.

If I choose a folder on the desktop, Kate springs to open it and I get an error Msg. that states that it is a folder and can't be edited.
I tried to re-config. konqueror but with no luck. The File Assoc. in Config. has everything checked off, from all ...to video.

Drastic solution - delete ~/.kde

Folders. I did the same thing once. I don't remember how I fixed it but the following should work. If you open Konqueror and right-click on a folder in the main (right) panel, you get a context menu that includes "open with". You should be able to adopt
Code:

konqueror --profile filemanagement
and make it the default.

Hi Noranthon,
I don't quite understand " open Konqueror and right-click on a folder in the main (right) panel,"

I don't seem to have a (right) panel and what folder should I click on?

Just as a sidenote, I've seen similar works on MS Windows XP - though it tried to open everything in the "Find" tool, folders and files and everything. Kind of useless to try and open a text file, when clicking on it caused the dog to jump up and tell you it just found the file you clicked on. In that case a reboot did the trick, but just started to think that I'm worried about where these desktop systems are going: they're beginning to be so complex that problems like this rise, even though they should not.

I usually remove the config directory (or move it to different name) first, that solves if it's a configuration problem or not.

Hi b0uncer,
Sounds like an easy plan. Which config file should I temp. rename? and where is it?

I have Konqueror set up with a left sidebar. Many folders have sub-folders. In the sidebar I select a folder. The contents of the folder are displayed in the main panel. I right-click on a folder in that panel and select "Open with". I choose Konqueror to open with and make it the default.

Hi Noranthon,

SUCCESS!

"Folders. I did the same thing once. I don't remember how I fixed it but the following should work. If you open Konqueror and right-click on a folder in the main (right) panel, you get a context menu that includes "open with". "
Did the trick.

Before I managed to change it, even inside Konqueror, when I chose a folder, it called Kate!
I had to open Konqueror and drag a desktop Folder to it. 'Open with' then became an option but curiously, of all the listed programs in various menus, Konqueror was not listed. I typed in the name in the box and after choosing 'Apply', was delighted to read that the system was being updated.
