Cannot empty Gnome desktop Trash folder
I run FC8 with the Gnome desktop. There are several folders in the Trash that I cannot delete, even though the Permissions say I own them (they originated in a Windows partition). There is no .Trash folder in my home directory. Can anyone give me a suggestion on how I can empty the Trash? I've already read the similar threads and the answers all go back to the ~/.Trash folder, which doesn't exist on my system.

With trash do you mean on you´re desktop of Fedora ?
Where did the folders in trash come from Windows ? |
The Trash folder is on the Fedora Gnome desktop. The folders in Trash were discarded from a Windows XP partition on my system, which is mounted by Fedora.

search for .trash
I've noticed that newer versions of Gnome put it in a new place and removed the upper case. |
I've searched for .trash and .Trash in the filesystem, home directory and desktop without finding it. I don't know where the trash folder resides anymore.

If I like to delete something from my Windows partition , I do it always
root no matter who own,s the file ,even if it is trash in my case of opensuse |
On this Debian Lenny system. it's ~/.local/share/Trash/files/
Maybe it was just the dot they took away, not the upper case. Gnome 2.22.3 |
I found a file called Trash in ~/.local/Share with a subfolder called "files", but it's empty. I even listed the contents as root. Apparently, it's not the same Trash folder I see on the desktop. Good suggestion, though; hopefully, I'm getting closer.

Following up on rickh's suggestion, I searched in each of the "dot" files in my home directory. Under ~/.gnome/gnome-vhs is a file called .trash_entry_cache. When I opened that file, it indicated that the trash was stored on my external hard drive (where I store all my data) in a folder called /media/USBDISK/.Trash-(something). When I looked at the hidden folders in /media/USBDISK, I found several .Trash- folders, one of which is called .Trash-500. The files I was trying to delete were in there. So in a console window, I switched to root and did an rm -R -I for the each of the folders I wanted deleted. Success!!!

just a suggestion, wouldnt it be much easier to just search for the folders INSIDE the trash bin... even if you can find youre trash folder by searching for the trash folder yourself, gnome search SHOULD be able to find the folders inside the trash, and then you can find there directory, then you should have the trash folder.
Just fish food for thought. Though i dont remember if in Gnome if there search still lists the original directory(Prior to deletion) during a search...(Switched to KDE4 recently) if all else fails, the PATH from Nautilus, have trash return the files to the originating dir. and remove them from Terminal... |
for whatever it is worth. On ubuntu, 8.04 a users Trash folder can be found here.
~/.local/share/Trash |
Trash bin
Hi, I have more or less the same problem but in Suse 11 I can't find the path of the directory or of the files you were referring to. Under trash obviously I have just :///trash, isn't there a possibility to recover the actual position of the pointer?
Thanks |
