can i get a dmg report mr. scott?!?!?

hello linux fans, i have a little question, and this time a gift. i have a usb device that has software for mac os-x and would like to run it under slackware, and quite possibly a few other distro's. its an m-audio mobilepre usb, and i would like to record using the "zero latency" feature that the drivers advertise. i really really appreciate all the help this forum provides me, the information provided to me here is priceless.

i have found a few other programs that have .dmg files that i would like to run under linux. the question is a 2 part one this time. 1 can i mount a dmg image and run the software as it was ment to be run on a mac? and 2 why is it so that it is easyer to setup wine to run microsoft programs rather than dmg files witch should be a snap to run anyways?

i have a few music websites, dedicated to the linux spirit of being freely available to anyone.

(and at least 3 more music projects in the cooker)

all music recorded was recorded under audacity 1.2.6 =)

I dunno, but I found this:

I'm pretty sure that running dmg on Linux is going to be difficult, and even if you manage to, it still won't work. Best think to do is try to get the device working natively on Linux.

i have seen several pages that state the device will work natively under linux via alsa. the thing that i am tripping about is the "lag free" feature the driver boasts.

H_TeXMeX_H 09-02-2008 02:52 AM

Have you tried it to see if it works "lag free" already natively, before trying to make it work lag free ?

ninja master 09-03-2008 06:13 AM

no, i havent. im currently fighting out a kernel rebuild. my systems quite old and im 99% sure it will not be lag free with my system as is.

Make sure you read the fine print on that lag free guarantee, I bet it says minimum system requirements on there.

ok the fine print on the "lag free" states that the driver has a function to make the device directly route signal from input to output without any processing inbetween to lag the sound in the first place. i ripped apart my linux machine and switched the motherboard and proc to a faster setup, this motherboard reports that it runs 3 times faster than the previous motherboard (even though it only has 350 more mhz on the proc to play with.)

the previous motherboard would (pardon my french) _shit_ if i tryed to run jack at realtime. the thing of it is that the dmg image has software that would make the soundboard run lag free regardless of how trashy of a system i put it on. it is so i can sample and monitor at realtime, a big plus if your recording a track. i have come across several other DMG type images that i would like to run. if osx is based off of linux, why cant linux run dmg files =(

It's not based on Linux, it's built on FreeBSD and Mach (another BSD descendent). The ABI is totally different, so there's zero chance your binary OS X driver is going to work under any other OS.

ok ill start harassing m-audio to make linux drivers for my device then. thanks for a strait answer chort =)
