Can a /home partition be added without reinstalling?

Recently installed a small linux distro (Debian "etch" using xfce4 instead of Gnome or KDE) all in one partition (except for using a prexisting swap partition). Question: can an additional partition be created so as to separate out home from the rest? Or even some other directories? If so what is the mechanism that causes linux to recognize home on the separate partition? Or must one reinstall the distro to get the separate partitions? (In that case I would also have to reinstall some applications that I have added.)

I think this is what you're looking for: Go to section 6b.

Thanks, this is a nice lucid explanation of how to move /home to a separate partition, or to move it from its separate partition to a different one.
