Can't set to 1280x1024 on Ubuntu with ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 and external monitor

Trying to change screen resolution to 1280x1024 under System->Preferences->Screen Resolution, but I can only choose from 640x800, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x800. I have an external monitor connected to my laptop. The laptop's internal monitor has a maximum resolution of 1280x800, and I suspect that is why I'm not allowed to set a higher resolution...

I was told to edit xorg.conf and manually add 1280x1024 in the list of resolutions, but I'm no expert on X or Linux in general, so I may have screwed it up somehow. Here's what it looks like in xorg.conf:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]"
HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0
Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
Option "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Generic Video Card"
Driver "fglrx"
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"

BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Device"

EndSection

Section "Screen"

Thx for your help, people.

Did you submit the full xorg.conf file?

I have a feeling that the video modes you posted are actually not being used at all... Maybe your xorg.conf is calling on Screen 'aticonfig-Screen[0]' instead of 'Default Screen'

Try copying

Modes "1280x1024" "1280x800" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Into the section that looks like:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]"
Device "aticonfig-Device[0]"
Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
<paste here>
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection
