Can't import image for impress background

I am having trouble importing a background image for an Open Office Impress Presentation. The help file says

To use an image for the slide background
You can display an entire image as a slide background, or you can tile the image to produce a patterned background.
1.Choose Format - Page, and then click on the Background tab.
2.In the Fill area, select Bitmap, and then click an image in the list.

If you want to use a custom image for the slide background, close the Page Setup dialog, and then choose Format - Area. Click the Bitmaps tab, and then click Import. Locate the image you want to import and click Open. When you return to the Background tab, the image you imported will be in the Bitmap list.
The problem is that there is no import control on the Page Setup | Bitmaps tab. I am using Open Office 2.0.4 running under Edgy

...:/proc$ cat version
Linux version 2.6.17-10-386 (root@terranova) (gcc version 4.1.2 20060928 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.1-13ubuntu5)) #2 Tue Dec 5 22:26:18 UTC 2006 (Ubuntu 2.6.17-10.34-386)
...:/proc$ ooimpress --version
This is built with ooo-build-2.0.4
Can someone point me to a solution? Thanks

You can try this

View->Master->Slide Master
Insert-> Picture -> From File

the picure so inserted can be reshaped to fill the slide area then right click on the picture & goto Arrange -> Send Backward
finally goto View (main menu) & select Normal
The picture now will appear on all the slides

If you want this image only on one slide simply paste it on that slide & send it backward

Thanks, sn68, that is a great help. It seems the oo documentation should be improved.
