Do you have /usr/lib/X11/misc/cursor.pcf.gz and a whole bunch of /usr/lib/X11/misc/*ISO8859*.pcf.gz files?

-- Did you mean /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz? If so I do have /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/cursor.pcf.gz

Do you have the file /usr/lib/X11/misc/fonts.alias and what is the alias font for fixed?

-- I have /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias and the alias for fixed is

fixed -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1

What are the permissions on /usr/lib/X11/misc and the font files?

-- Permissions for the directory misc are 755 root:root
-- Fonts within the directory are all 644 root:root

BTW, it's odd that you have fonts in two places if you followed the BLFS instructions.

-- I wanted to build Xorg in a different directory incase something went wrong, I could remove it easier. Thinking my location for the fonts was the problem I re-compiled them in the expected location.

Also my fonts.dir file does not contain any entries

#cat fonts.dir
0
#

tried using mkfontdir to update this file, but it just keeps placing only 0 in it. Tried to rebuild mkfontscale and mkfontdir with no luck.

Thanks,

ED

I was able to get X to start after copying over misc fonts from another host that had an updated fonts.dir file.

I would still ike to know why mkfontdir does not work.

Thanks to everyone who helped.
