backup software, which?

Hi,

I'd like to back-up my harddrive to dvd's and so have tried a few programs that did the work perfectly, except they all compress or somehow archive files in such a way that you can't restore it directly from the CD.

KDar for instance requires all the dvd's to be loaded to the hdd before you can restore a backup, but I simply don't have enough disk space to do this.

Is there programs that can restore your files by loading one DVD at a time?

(I have thought as an alternative to such a program one which simply seperates folders/files onto multiple disks (without splitting files) would also do the job, as then I could just manually copy everything back to my hdd, plus it gives the added advantage of not being bound to a specific back-up program.)

Any ideas or recommendations is greatly appreciated.

I find nothing in the Kdar handbook which says the cd/dvd has the be on the hard disk in order to restore files. Quite the opposite.

All you need is the catalog of files on the cd/dvd. You can use Kdar to browse the archive/catalog contents, and restore files selectively.

Read sections Browse Archive and Restore Archive of the Kdar Handbook for more information. You migh also get the Dar tutorial from the Dar website (Kdar is the frontend for Dar)and read about the catalog and management of archives via the command-line dar_manager tool.
