Backup software

Hi, I've been using K3b to backup software I have developed as root and as user. On a recent install to a second desktop I discovered that the backed up files did not have dates and permissions retained.
I thought about tar-ing everythng and piping to cp using permission retention but tar is apparently not recursive in Slackware 13.37.
I want to extract /etc, /opt, /root, and the user recursively. What would be the best/fastest way?

rsync?

Code:
rsync -auvr --progress /local/path user@server:/remote/path

BE WARNED! DOING AN RSYNC OF CRITICAL DIRECTORIES LIKE /etc CAN CAUSE ISSUES! MAKE A FULL BACKUP FIRST!

Backup software

Yes that would be great across a network, I think (just did a quick view of rsync manpage).
I apologize for not being more specific. I am wanting to backup files onto either CD or DVD. My scan in the man page did not refer to either.
