Question Backup Data and Settings

I updated my system from suse10.2 to 10.3. My system is running but it seems to be not in a consistent state. So I would to backup my data and settings to kill my system and reinsatll it. But what should I backup? I need my home directory where are all my pictures, music and documents are, but where are my Emails (Evolution) and all the settings of my programs? Are they all in the hidden folders in my home directory or do I have to backup more?

Your user settings for applications is in the hidden files in your home folder. Global settings/configurations are in /etc. The only files there you need to worry about are those you have manually configured to give all users the same applications.

You may want to save a copy of your root user's folder /root.

If you have edited /etc/fstab to make some adjustment, save a copy of that.

Save a copy of /boot/grub/menu.lst, in case you have problems with the new menu.lst (grub.conf on some distros). Partition designations and boot parameters may change, and having the backup copy for reference would be useful.

I don't know how Evolution saves mail. You could use the locate command to search for 'mail' or 'Mail' to see if anything turns up.
