Avant-window-navigator on Ubuntu

I am running Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy) and I have Beryl installed with no problems. I then installed avant-window-navigator to get the open window icons at the bottom of the screen. When I start a-w-n as a user I get "Segmentation fault (core dumped)" and when I try to start it as root I get the following:
"(process:5208): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2240: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:5208): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_new: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_OBJECT (object_type)' failed

(process:5208): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
Segmentation fault (core dumped)"

If anyone has any ideas or any suggestions of similar programs I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

ogee
