Question ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 Questions

I followed the tutorial below and installed the legacy version it didn't work. So then i did a clean reinstall i installed the driver from ati then i completed this tutorial installing the legacy packages instead then ran yum update and installed the kmod for my current kernel 3.6.9 and everything worked. my question is why? did updating the kmod work as the driver only supports up to 3.4? Im really curious. can i cut out any of the steps in the future?
