Application specific desktop geometry

How can I given different applications different desktop geometries. I have a kiosk application that uses the right 1/4 of the screen for status information. I don't want the user to be able to move applications like vlc and flash windows into the right 1/4 of the screen even if they run in full screen mode. How can I restrict certain applications to only render in the left 3/4 of the screen. I don't want to have to start another X server for them because I will lose hardware acceleration.

Typically you don't set apps to run in certain areas. You set your extra to alway run on top. What ver of Ubuntu (assuming you post icon is correct) are you running, what desktop environment are you using, and what is this app your using to display your sysinfo etc...

Maybe a different (read: tiling) window manager is in order… I don't have much experience with those, though, so I won't be able to help.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome. The kiosk will run on Arch Linux with fluxbox with no desktop environment. The sysinfo is part of a custom Qt app that covers the whole desktop, but it is only the right 1/4 of the screen that has to be always visible. One of the problems I found with setting the sysinfo to always be on top is that if the user elects to run vlc or flash in full screen mode then part of the video will be hidden under the sysinfo. I still want a full screen mode for video I just want it contained in the left 3/4 of the screen.

If you can display the system information on the desktop using conky, then if you use xfce as your desktop environment you can set margins on the desktop to limit window placement.

To set the desktop margins, use the Settings Manager (Settings Manager > Workspaces & Margins > Margins).

I can't use conky to display the sysinfo I need to use a custom Qt app that contains bitmaps. I tried out the margins feature in xfce. It doesn't seem restrict apps in fullscreen mode to only display inside the margins.
