Adding subtext to AVI with mencoder.

What I have done so far. I have encoded DVD to my computer and then I take subtexts from DVD disk with mencoder which produced .sub and .idx files. Now I can play the movie from my computer with mplayer and using vobsub option but what I really like to do is make an AVI-file which contains this subtext in a movie itself so I could watch the movie from my TV with DVD player.

Problem is that mencoder doesn't seem to have any options to read those vobsub files. It can only write them or I am missing some options.

Mencoder could use other subfile formats as inputs so is there any kind of conversion tool available ?

Or perhaps I am missing few options with mencoder and you could advice me on those ?

I would be greatfull for help.

The "problem" is that hardcoding subs the way you want to do it means de- and remuxing streams twice. Compressing twice won't be good wrt quality. IIGC with mencoder you can select a subtitle stream with "-slang en" (english subs) when you're going to convert, that should add the subs as hardcoded in the output stream but I haven't tried that myself. If you can manage to rip subs to SRT format instead, you could do "mencoder -ovc codecname -oac codecname -sub input.srt -o output.avi input.avi". For another approach, MPEG-based instead of AVI, you could check Encode2mpeg. To get the idea see chapter add Chapters and Subtitles to VCD/SVCD/DVD from SPU streams, Vobsub and text subtitles. Maybe also search LQ for similar threads, though I have no idea if there's any. If there are none you could also check the Mplayer site mailing lists and docs, there's a lot of info about mencoder usage there. If *that* doesn't help there's only two fora on the 'net that excel dealing with video: Doom9 and Afterdawn. Unfortunately that *may* require you to run POS or POS tools under WINE...

Thank you for your help unspawn. And my problem is that I don't know how to convert that vobsub -file to another format like .srt. The method you mention doesn't work because there is no option how mencoder could read vobsub file. There are option for mplayer to read vobsub files and it works great. That unfortunately is bad for my standalone DVD player which can play single MPEG-4 ( xvid ) encoded AVI-files.

I will use that mpeg tool you suggested as last resort. But for now I am waiting more help from mencoder experts ( if they happen to stop by this thread )...Please please more suggestions and advices.
