Background:
After trying ZorinOS and finding it less than optimal for my uses, I switched to Ubuntu 12.04 with LXDE and that is a very good fit for me.

Problem:
I have a couple of x mouse cursor files I'd like to use, and can find no way to do so.

Apparently to be used they must be part of a theme - but how does one go from having a couple of naked *.XMC files to somehow putting them into a theme ???

I have been unable to find any info on this.

Quite simply in google.com can find this article https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cursor_Themes — it's, probably, enough.

And so.
You have “x mouse cursor” files.
Let us verify this execute command 'file some_files' and should see something like this
$ file sb_v_double_arrow
>sb_v_double_arrow: X11 cursor
then create directories
$ mkdir -p ~/.icons/my_theme/cursors
and copy “x mouse cursor” files to ~/.icons/my_theme/cursors
“x mouse cursor” files must have the appropriate names, like these:
$ ls /usr/share/icons/DMZ-White/cursors/

Next, you need create ~/.icons/my_theme/index.theme
$ cat >~/.icons/my_theme/index.theme<<EOF
[Icon Theme]
Name=My_Theme
Comment=My accessible cursor theme
Name[en_CA]=My_Theme
Name[en_GB]=My_Theme
EOF

and need create ~/.icons/my_theme/cursor.theme
$ cat >~/.icons/my_theme/cursor.theme<<EOF
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=my_theme
EOF

and maybe last, add cursor theme in ~/.Xresources
cat >>~/.Xresources<<EOF
Xcursor.theme: my_theme
EOF

After restart X session, you should see you cursor theme.

Of course I searched before asking - and got 1000's of results - and did not see that one you found.

Next time I will be able to play with this will be on the weekend if I don't have to work then too.
