Actually that's Ubuntu's Beryl desktop running on kde. Google is your friend. I googled
Code:
install beryl desktop ubuntu
and found this site:
http://www.everyjoe.com/newlinuxuser...u-feisty-fawn/
The installation is for feisty but I'm sure it's similar on other ubuntu versions.
Cheers and keep on googling,
jdk

With a recent enough Ubuntu just head over to the Appearance dialog (under the Settings menu), and from the Visual Effects check the radio button to enable the effects, if they already aren't. You'll need a decent graphics card and appropriate drivers for it, of course. Then install compizconfig-settings-manager (will be inserted to your settings menu in Gnome),
Code:
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
and you can easily tweak all the Compiz effects (there's also a "simple" configuration utility, but I sort of dislike it, and the Appearance dialog settings only let you to choose one of three levels---off/some/more effects---so this one you'll need). That's it.

It's Compiz Fusion nowadays, not Beryl or Compiz alone.

Where does gnome or whatever store the state of those radio buttons: None vs. Normal vs. Extra?

Am I correct that the state of these radio buttons is per user not per login? (If I allow multiple logins, user=jane will have the same setting locally as they do on an X11 tunnel or other remote X11 session.)

When that state changes, does the desktop or window manager and friends notice immediately or must one kick the can somehow before all of X11 parts notice the change? (I know that reboot is not required like win-doze.)
