2 WMs at the same time on 2 different screens possible?
 

Hey friends,

I have absolutely no experience regarding dual screen on X so far.
So I just have a few theoretical or hypothetical questions - the main one was already mentioned in thread title:

1) Are multiple window managers working at the same time on multiple screens possible or not?
1.a) If yes - great! Are they compatible? Meaning: Is it possible to issue a command like 'firefox' in one and then get Firefox started in the other or vice versa? Is it possible to move windows from one to another?
1.b) If no: Then there are virtual desktops. Are they individual for each screen or does switching virtual desktop 1 to 2 mean a switch for both screens at the same time?

2) Fullscreen apps on windows normally lock on the primary screen. Is there a definition for where to lock fullscreen apps in X desktops?

3) Is it even possible to run X only on one screen and leave the other completely without X but ttys with framebuffer support running? (And maybe a shortcut like shift+alt+f1 etc. to switch to that screen?)

No it isn't. You only have one window manager associated with your logon. X provides the various screens and it only uses one Window manager per login.

You can get around this by using a virtual machine. This would get you a second login that you could full-screen on a second monitor.

I was going to say pretty much what garydale said. After thinking about it the last idea might be done if you had two video cards. I seem to remember this from many many years ago. The original linux set up had you edit xorg files and basically all the terminal files. Back then I'd bet someone would know how to do this. These files are not automatic and I haven't played with them in decades. I think you can get a x on one screen and text on the other.
