[KDE] Ignoring LANG? / How to change localization temporarily?
 

Hi,

(I decided I like this place and I'd like to be more active here and more efficient in my answers. Though my system is German, when it comes to explaining GUI applications, it is preferable to call menu and option names with their English names in my postings.)

So, how do I change the language of a KDE application temporarily, without restarting KDE?

I know that setting LANG for instance to 'en_GB' in a shell should change localization for all commands I henceforth type in that shell.
But KDE applications started from there seem just to ignore that setting!
I tried to set LANG and then also LC_MESSAGES to 'en_EN', just 'en', even to 'C' -- but KDE apps just don't care...
My guess is that newly-started applications attach themselves to an already running KDE program (perhaps ksmserver?) and inherit its shell environment. Or maybe I'm just doing something wrong.

Any suggestions?

In case anyone is interested, I got the answer to my problem in another forum.

The variable used by KDE is not LANG but KDE_LANG. Duh. Didn't know that.
