I never use the trashcan and get tired of emptying it all the time.
Is there a way to 'uninstall' this functionality all together, either by:
1. removing the Trash application (if indeed there is such a thing), or
2. set the trash properties to always delete everything (as opposed to store it - like it is possible with the Windows Bin), or
3. simply remove the icon and set my delete key to always Delete instead of Move to Trash.
Might be simple - I hope so - but I have searched high and low and cannot find any info on this.
You didn't tell use what Desktop Environment (e.g. KDE, GNOME or XFCE) or Window Manager that you are using. This may help you get accurate responses to your questions.
Do the following: Konqueror -> Settings -> Configure Konqueror and then select Behaviour in the iconbar to the left. Tick the checkbox Show 'Delete' context menu entries which bypass the trashcan. You can then remove the trashcan icon from the desktop or leave it as it is if you wish.
Thanks for the quick reply, though sadly that didn't really address my wishes.
I am already seeing the the menu option for Delete (not moving to the trashcan), though as stated, I wish this to be the default for any type of deletion. Or crudely put, I want the delete key to actually delete, never move stuff to the trashcan.
Any of the three posibilities to archive this end (see my original post)- or any other you can think of... ?
The delete option does just that - deletes without moving to the Trashcan first. I used to have Delete this as my default but after deleting some unretrievable files one too many times I soon learnt that the Trashcan is my friend!
I'd be very surprised if the trashcan could be completely uninstalled without affecting the overall functionality of the Desktop.
Thanks for your reply, though.... is everybody misunderstanding me or am I misunderstanding everybody? Most likely the latter.
I know that Delete from the menu does that, but the delete key does not. At least on my set-up. The delete key maps to Move to Trash. Does anyone know if I can, as a minimum work-around, map it to directly delete.
Seems like option 1 of my original idea is out, though what about either 2 or 3 (or indeed 4, if anyone has any ideas):
1. removing the Trash application (if indeed there is such a thing), or
2. set the trash properties to always delete everything (as opposed to store it - like it is possible with the Windows Bin), or
3. simply remove the icon and set my delete key to always Delete instead of Move to Trash.
