No updates for many days/weeks
 

Hi there,

Am I the only one experiencing this?

I haven't received any updates for quite a while now. I have been expecting to see the latest Firefox and Thunderbird updates and the usual other updates but nothing has happened.

Perhaps a reason has been given the to the community in Chinese, but it would be helpful to let the wider community know what is happening.

Anyone know what is going on?

Depending on your installation and packages, it could be possible. On a server I have sometimes quite a long time can go by before I have any updates.

It can also depend on the mirror you use. At times they are slow to sync and leave you without updates as well.

As far as I can tell, Deepin 2013 is based on Ubuntu 13.04 'Raring Ringtail' which is only supported until January 2014.

The deepin updates were probably just ubuntu updates, since 13.04 is 'out of support' the deepin 2013 updates are dead as well.

Yes, I was wondering if the demise of Raring was a significant issue. I guess the developers have a plan for the future - at least I hope so. Thanks for your replies.

Sorry, but we were having our Chinese New Year holidays, so there were no updates for more than a week. As we are still using Ubuntu's repositories as part of our repositories (Firefox and Thunderbird are from Ubuntu's repositories), I'll discuss with the developers and see if they can provide newer versions of the concerned packages, like Firefox and Thunderbird.


No, Deepin's updates are updates for its own desktop environment, system settings and applications. Linux Deepin 2013 is still maintained and supported.

Yes, Linux Deepin 2014 is being actively developed and there will be lots and lots of things worth looking forward to.

Does this mean that you are independently backporting patches for serious security related bugs?

No, sorry. In fact we are a small team and are not doing this at the moment. For Linux Deepin 2013 We are mostly maintaining the desktop environment and applications we've developed.

I see. It's extremely unfortunate that your current release is based on a OS (Ubuntu 13.04) that had such a short support cycle. If you are unable to provide security support for your distribution I would suggest basing it on something that does. Eg use LTS versions of Ubuntu as your base. Or perhaps work to have your desktop environment and applications officially packaged in a distribution that does have enough man power to provide security updates.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll keep it in mind and will make sure with the developers that security support will be taken care of for future releases at least in some way.

By the way, Linux Deepin 2014 will be probably based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I've seen recently they are migrating their work from Ubuntu 13.10, which they previously based it on, to the 14.04 version.
