Ok-

If you continue to have a black screen you might have to add nomodeset to the kernel line in Grub.

I have an hp. Will that make a difference?

I don't think having an HP would make a difference.....However; if it's a UEFI machine you will have to disable the secure boot in order to install Linux.

What's your machines specs?

Responsiveness of the system is better with liveos/persistence vs a full install
