Question Can Ubuntu version be upgraded inside a Docker container?

I have a media mangement server running inside a Docker container with a Ubuntu 14.04 distro. I wanted to see if upgrading to 16.10 would be possible, so I installed upgrade-manager and issued the command do-release-upgrade.
The upgrade process seemed to initiate well. The usual tons on command line events echoed away, until it came to a halt after:

calculating the changes

Since then, nothing more happened.
The container runs as before, and the media manager inside it runs as before.

I guess my question is; Is it possible - and a right thing to do, upgrading inside a container like this?

You'd have to run the upgrade (if possibly to complete) and detach.
And then save/rebuild the image so the changes stick in the new container.

Who built the original container?

Typically, depending on what's in the container, you may wish to hold
off on upgrading in this manner since containers seem new to you.
If it's not broke, don't fix it and all that.

Now, my Multimedia Manager is still running smoothly inside the affected container, but after the abrupt halt (described above) i tend to get the following error on most commands related to upgrade, update, package, etc. For instance, if I type lsb_release -ra all I get is Fatal Python Error: getrandom() failed
So now I'm stuck.

I do not know what you mean by "detach" and I do not know how to save/rebuild an image.
I believe Madsonic built the original image, but is there a way to find out, and why is that important to know?
The container solution is Docker running on a QNAP NAS. They call it 'Container Station' if that's what you were asking.....?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give :-)

apt appears broken in the container (from a hard reboot during upgrade, no doubt), so no further updates are likely to complete.
Sorry, I'd contact Madsonic for an updated image.
Or your docker administrator.

I am sorry, but I can't help here.

Well thanks anyway - for trying. This isn't critical. I'm doing it mostly to learn.... (It's become a habit :-)
