Took RHCE - - Failed
 

I just took my RHCE and failed miserably. I was ready for the exam because I can do everything listed in the RHCE prep guide.

I scored 100 on the troubleshoot section, 89 on the installation for RHCT, and 35 on the RHCE.

The scariest part I knew how to configure all of the network services and tested them during the exam. They all work when I tested them.

Can someone who passed RHCE help me figure out what I did wrong? Or give me some few pointers?

have you rebooted your computer? and them tested?

chkconfig on, on all services?

selinux and iptables...

I did check all of the services after I rebooted during the installation portion with chkconfig --list <service> for each of the required network services. There were all on for runlevels 3 - 5. I also did a service <Service-Name> status to make sure they were running...

As for IP Tables... I only used the Firewall GUI tool to allow the services by checking on them.

SELinux - I ran the SELinux Troubleshooter and corrected the error by using the suggestions listed.

To secure the services, I used tcp_wrapper as well.

That's why I'm pretty stuck on this???

you might misinterpreted a question requesting access/block to a service, but if you are pretty sure you did everything they said, this would be the case to ask for a test result revision!.

FWIW, I used Jang's book along with with the Prep Guide and the Red Hat documentation http://www.amazon.com/Certified-Engi...6972703&sr=8-1

But the best advice that was given to me was...

* READ all the directions before you start
* read ALL the directions before you start
* read all THE directions before you start
* read all the DIRECTIONS before you start
* read all the directions BEFORE you start
* read all the directions before YOU start
* read all the directions before you START
* READ ALL THE DIRECTIONS BEFORE YOU START

I know that time is short during the test and it's easy to feel like you need to rush...but trust me. If you take the time to make sure you understand EVERYTHING that is being asked of you, it will actually _save_ you time. Also Jangs mentions a good tip in his book "Don't do anything that isn't asked of you" (i.e. Don't overdo it).

Can you ask someone relevant/responsible,why you've failed?Wouldn't that be the best way to find out what's wrong?

I did go by Jang's book for studying. I agree it did help out alot. Especially his exercises during the chapter and the 2 minute reviews...

There is an e-mail address on the test result e-mail. Let me e-mail them and see if I can get some answers...

Since you have already taken the RHCE and signed the same NDA as I, is it ok if I sent an e-mail of the RHCE with what I did? Then please tell me what I did wrong. You don't have to tell me the answers because I probably know it. I just need to find out what I did wrong so I can prevent it on the next test.

i emailed redhat a few times and yes, they were strict in their policy. I believed you might have lost marks on the firewall/selinux part. As far as I know, these are great deductions.

other than the gui, I think you also need to know the command line equivalent so as to double check on the results + the exact files to change and so on.

I think it might be OK...but I don't want to risk it ;)

Yes, SELinux is mentioned HEAVLY in Jangs book (and on the prep guide).

I know that I spent A LOT of time studying how SELinux works and how iptables work with various services... and FWIW I got a 100/92/96 and I MADE SURE (I had some extra time) that EVERYTHING was working when I left...

So who knows how they grade it...

Maybe you need to do more than using Firewall GUI Tool

It's really OK. If it is any consolation, 75% of my class also failed the RHCE exam.

You are now in a unique position of having a preview of the exam, so adjust your next round of studying as needed.

A quick google, and I can't find an exact copy of the RHCE NDA to point to. But, as you probably remember, he can't do that.
