Taking RHS333 next week

Booked myself in for the RHS333 Network Security exam next week, to get to 2/5 of my RHCA. Already not sure it's going to be all that taxing, appears to consist of a lot of token gestures for security, but we'll see. After that I'll have a bash at RH442, which looks hard, but probably isn't as bad as I think. After that, it's more of the straight sales pitch exams with cluster services and the likes.

Anyone have any thoughts over the real life benefits of RHCA compared to RHCE or other similar certs? Hopefully it can add 15k to my salary, which would make paying for part of it myself an easy equation. Especially appealing as once it's done it never has to be recertified, only RHCE, which would be the plan for the future anyway.

All the Best, Chris.

Some ppl rely on luck, smart ppl rely on cause and effect.

Cheers, Glenn

Hurrah! Well after being told i got 0% in both parts, I finally got my exam remarked and averaged 77.5% across 6 hours. Super! 2 down, 3 more to go, then RHCA is all mine I tell you! MINE!!!!

GrapefruiTgirl 12-19-2009 12:43 PM

Congrats Chris!!

I must ask: how did they manage to arrive at 0% the first time around?? And what was the difference that made the next markers arrive at the 77.5% ?

The guy from RedHat said there was an obscure bug in the marking code. You got any certifications at all? I'm probably going to persue RHCA until I complete it now, as long as I reckon I can self-study well enough, but I'm not convinced anyone will really care if I do get it.

I don't have any "directly-computer-related" certifications, no, but indirectly I'm a CNC machinist technician.

I say "Go for it!" as long as you're interested in it -- more certificates are generally better IMHO.

Congratulation.
These 5 exams are one time shot? If pass one time then u don't have to renew everytime like RHCE?
In your opinion which one should I target first i.e., I mean which one is easy among them?:D

acid_kewpie 12-31-2009 02:51 AM

Yeah you *NEVER* have to renew them, just keep RHCE going, so once you get past the first sitting it's kinda like a freebie.

Congrats!

What are you using to self study? I took the RH442 class and exam a few months ago and it was extremely difficult. There's some pretty obscure stuff in there that you'll probably never have to use. I'll probably do RH333 next, luckily my company pays for all of it and they don't really care if I pass the exam.

I better go with RHCSS as I am doing my MS in security too. So what do you think, which one will be better ; lots of self study or take the classes?
I think taking the classes will be better the get a clear idea of what to concentrate more on and what to not.

You should probably do both. I know the classes are expensive, so try and get your employer to pay for it. The classes usually give you a really good idea about what's on the exam.

I just based it off of the syllabus. I did the RH423 class and exam and got 100%, did self study here and only hit 77% on average, 73% on one half so did nearly fail...

cvstealth 01-04-2010 01:20 PM

Congrats on passing! Did you find that it was a tough exam? Also did you find that it followed the prep guide relatively well? I've done 2 of the 5 for RHCA and this is the next one that I have lined up. Any feedback would be appreciated!

acid_kewpie 01-04-2010 01:30 PM

TBH I thought it was hard. I also think I was hit by something very close to a bug which scuppered a big chunk of marks in one half. I came out thinking i'd get about 75% and 90% in the first and second parts (which are broadly in line with the prep guide split) but got 82% and 73%, so really suprised it was so low on the second part.

I got 100% on EX423 and 98% on RHCE, and had generally felt those exams were a bit poor (if I get that much, something must be wrong...) but this time I did find it a worthy adversary or whatever. It's not so much how hard it is, but just how much sheer stuff there is to do in it. Could've done with more time, but clearly didn't strictly need it.

cvstealth 01-04-2010 01:53 PM

Various people that I've talked to have said the same type of comments about EX333. I have the same feeling with the EX442 that it was a worth adversary but I must say it did give me a much deeper understanding of the underlying kernel subsystems. My game plan is to take a month to study between the actual class and taking EX333, I learned my lesson the last time :).
