Taking Comptia Linux+ exam
Hey everyone,
I will be taking the Comptia Linux+ Exam (Powered by LPI) part 1 (Exam 101) in just over 2 weeks from now. Just wondering if anyone is currently studying for the same cert and planning to write anytime soon? I have been studying since the start of August and have been using the Sybex Linux+ book as well as running Ubuntu 12.04 server and CentOS 5.2 in virtual machines to get my practice in on the command line. It's been fun to say the least. So far things the concepts listed in the sylabus provided by CompTIA has been straightforward and fairly easy to understand. I am wondering if anyone else here is finding the same or having somewhat a similar experience? Wish me luck! |

So did you pass the CompTia LX tests? I did a major fail, i think it was the book i used since it did not prepare me for the exam one bit.

When the questions appear are they completely new concepts to you or have you been exposed to them previously? I found that my experience (from work) helped me since I use it in a production environment. I have only passed part 1 thus far and will be tackling part 2 in January. You have to keep in mind that most of the books out there on the market are grossly outdated (for example - LILO is deprecated now and you should focus on how to get in and out of GRUB since it is the default boot loader now). Good luck and don't give up! Are you a member of the LPIC? They recently sent me an offer to take the exam part 1 or 2 with some practice questions and get a free re-write if you fail. Well it took me a while but I passed the second part of the CompTIA Linux+ exam. I took LXO-102 and passed! After 2 and a half months of studying (reading the Sybex manual) and labbing up a few examples from the book to get some hands on experience I decided to take the exam. It was tough and while I didn't score as high as I did on the first part im happy it's over.
I do have to say the study materials available are grossly (and I mean grossly) outdated. Something needs to be done to bring the content up to where the exams are now. If memory serves me correctly LPI & CompTIA updated the exam objectives in July 2012 - most of these books are from 2009 or earlier. Make sure you practice your commands because the concepts become so much more clear when you see them. Things such as ssh, netstat, adding routes, useradds, removing users, dns, scripting, services etc - when practiced can give you a good handle on things both in the exam and the real world. All in all im glad I took the exams as I was able to learn things I don't think I would ever use or have learned about conceptually on the job. I feel I have a good background in it now and i'll be off to pursue even bigger Linux based certs (RHCSA etc) Awaiting my confirmation from CompTIA but I will have earned the 3 certs in 1 shot (they forward your scores to the different organizations that recognize this skill set) LPIC-1 Linux+ CNLA Good luck to everyone who is currently studying or is about to sit this exam...if I can be of any help please feel free to message me! |
